Cyclone Alert: Low Pressure Area Forming with 135 km/h Storm Expected to Hit Kolkata!

Cyclone Dana is expected to move from west to northwest and is likely to turn depression by tomorrow morning and a cyclonic storm by Wednesday over the Bay of Bengal (east-central).

The latest reports from the Meteorological Department suggest that a cyclone can born as a low-pressure site has formed in the Bay of Bengal. Due to the low-pressure region, the cyclone can affect some parts of West Bengal in the next three days and its adjacent states like Odisha. Speaking about the low-pressure area formed over the east-central Bay of Bengal and the north Andaman Sea.

On Monday, October 21, 2024, i.e. today, a low-pressure area was marked over east-central Bay of Bengal at 11:30 AM. Cyclone Dana’s movement is being predicted by the Meteorological Department as it may move west-northwestwards. The intensity of Cyclone Dana is likely to turn depression by Tuesday morning and form a cyclonic storm by Wednesday over the east-central Bay of Bengal.

The meteorological department also predicted that Cyclone Dana may move northwestwards and reach the northwest Bay of Bengal by the next morning. If the cyclone continues this trajectory, it will cross the coasts of north Odisha and West Bengal between Puri and Sagar Island between Thursday night and Friday morning as it will turn into a cyclonic storm traveling at a speed of 100 to 110 kmph which may even touch 120 kmph.

IMD stated that the temperature of the sea surface is above normal, between 29 and 32 degrees Celsius over the Bay of Bengal which is favorable for the development of a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal. On Sunday, the director general of the Indian Meteorological Department M Mohapatra said that the adjoining coasts of Odisha and West Bengal have been put on pre-cyclone watch. The maximum impact is likely to be on Odisha and West Bengal coasts. Heavy downpours are likely to begin in Odisha on October 23 evening.

On October 24 and 25, heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy downpours are expected over coastal West Bengal and Odisha. IMD also predicted that some regions can also witness rainfall over 30 cm. On Thursday, the wind speed can go up to 100-120 kmph forming a ‘severe cyclone’.

The Alipore Meteorological Department also reported that the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal will suffer stormy weather for three days due to low pressure. After the cyclogenesis, wind gusts of 90-120 kmph are expected to gust over the northwest Bay of Bengal on October 24. The maximum speed of wind can go up to 135 kmph.

Due to high wind speed and stormy weather, the sea will be rough near the coast. Therefore, the authorities have prohibited fishermen from entering the South and Central Bay of Bengal for three days from October 21 to October 23. In the Central and North Bay of Bengal, the fishermen are prohibited Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, and Jhargramtill Friday morning.
