Lalu Yadav and his family members are facing charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and corruption. In July last year, the CBI arrested Bhola Yadav, who was Lalu Yadav’s OSD when he was railway minister. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has said in a statement that the current market value of the land allegedly acquired by Lalu Yadav’s family in lieu of jobs is around Rs 200 crore. The Enforcement Directorate has listed assets allegedly acquired by the Yadav family after searches at 24 locations in Delhi, Patna, Mumbai and Ranchi.
Sources close to Tejashwi Yadav had criticized the timing of the move saying that he never expected such vendetta politics from the BJP when his wife was expecting a child. His sister said their family was being “tortured” just because their family never bowed down to “fascists and terrorists”. Amid the ongoing political war over the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia, eight opposition parties last week wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging that central investigative agencies were misused to target him. The Congress had condemned these raids by issuing a separate statement.
The alleged fraud took place between 2004 and 2009 when Lalu Yadav was the railway minister. Apart from the head of the RJD, the charge sheet also contains the name of the then General Manager of the Railways.
The CBI has said that the investigation has revealed that the candidates were considered without the need for any substitute to be appointed and that they did not need to be appointed which was one of the main criteria behind the appointment of substitutes. But his appointment and regularization was approved later. Several discrepancies were found in the applicants’ application forms and attached documents. His appointment should not have been approved, but it was.
