In the Lok Sabha Election 2024, a total of 30 candidates representing different parties contested for the seat of Amritsar the number of candidates was the same in 2019 as well but in 2014 it was 23 and 14 in 2009. The increased number of candidates shows the political significance and demographic weight of this constituency. Speaking of the candidates contesting from Amritsar in 2024 are Indian National Congress’s Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Taranjit Singh Sandhu Samundri, Aam Aadmi Party’s Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, Bahujan Samaj Party’s Vishal Sidhu, Shiromani Akali Dal’s Anil Joshi, and 25 others.

Speaking of the demographic dynamics of the Amritsar constituency, it has a 29% Scheduled Caste people of total population. The literacy rate of this constituency is 77% says 2011 report of the Census of India. In Amritsar, a total of 16,02,626 people are eligible to vote, including 8,41,146 males, 7,61,419 females, and 61 others. On June 1, 2024, Amritsar underwent the polls in Phase 7 of Lok Sabha Elections 2024. In 2019 and 2014, Amritsar underwent polls in Phase 7 and Phase 1 respectively. The voters’ turnout this year was registered at 54.02% which has dropped by around 3% in comparison to 2019’s 57%. In 2014, the voter turnout was 68%, and 66% in 2009. People always remain curious about the results of the elections. This year, INC candidate Gurjeet Singh Aujla is taking the lead for one more time after winning the same seat in 2019 against BJP’s Hardeep Singh Puri, with a margin of 99,626, with a vote share of 51.71%. Interestingly, in 2014, BJP’s popular politician who was also given a ministry as well, Arun Jaitley was defeated by Captain Amrinder Singh of the Indian National Congress, with a vote share of 47.94%. INC beat BJP in Amritsar with a margin of 1,02,770. In 2009, popular politician and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu then-BJP candidate won in Amritsar against Congress’s Om Prakash Soni with a small margin of 6,858 votes, with a vote share of 48.13%.

The Lok Sabha seat of Amritsar constituency comprises 9 assembly constituencies. Speaking of the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha Election for the Amritsar constituency, if Congress manages to secure the seat this time, it will be the 12th time the INC will rule this constituency since 1952. Gurjeet Singh Aujla who also won in 2019, is leading in the vote counts as of 11 AM. However, the trailing candidates of AAP and BJP can give a tough fight to Aujla in the coming rounds.
