On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, i.e. today, PM Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Bihar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut the ribbon in the presence of Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Governor Rajendra Arlekar, and other delegates presented at the inauguration ceremony of Nalanda University’s new campus. After taking oath as India’s Prime Minister for the third time and promising Bihar CM Nitish Kumar for the state’s speedy development, it is the first visit of PM Modi to Bihar. For the unversed, Nalanda University was declared a United Nations Heritage site in 2016. The ruins of ancient Nalanda University are located in Bihar where it was established back in the 5th century. PM Modi Inaugurates Nalanda University New Campus

Nalanda University is a famous institution where students come from across the world. The inauguration event for the new campus of Nalanda University was held on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, where the key guests were External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar, Governor of Bihar Rajendra Arlekar, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Ministers Vijay Sinha and Samrat Choudhary. In addition, the ambassadors of seventeen other countries also attended the inauguration event in Bihar.

The new campus of Nalanda University is located at Rajgir, Bihar. It is less than 20 km far from the Nalanda Mahavira, a World Heritage site. The university was established in 2010 by an Act of the Parliament. According to the reports, Nalanda University’s new campus is spread over an area of 450 acres. This university offers several courses in Buddhist Studies, Hindu Studies, Comparative Religion, and Ecological and Environmental Studies.

After inaugurating the new campus of Nalanda University, PM Modi shared a tweet that marked this event as a special day for India’s education sector. Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University at around 10:30 AM at Rajgir, Bihar. PM Modi also tweeted that Nalanda has a considerable connection with India’s glorious past and Nalanda University will surely cater to youth’s educational needs. The new campus of Nalanda University is set up near the ancient ruins of the university which was destroyed in the 12th century but started functioning in 2014 with just only 14 students. The development of the new campus near the ancient ruins of Nalanda University began in 2017.

As of now, Nalanda University has five functional educational blocks including the School of Ecology and Environmental Studies, the School of Historical Studies, the School of Languages and Literature/Humanities, the School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy and Comparative Religion, and the School of Management Studies. As mentioned, Nalanda University attracts students from different parts of the world as many international students from Bangladesh, Kenya, Cambodia, Argentina, Ghana, Nepal, Nigeria Sri Lanka, and the US have enrolled in the postgraduate programs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi watched the ruins of ancient Nalanda University before inaugurating the new building. The new campus has various structures like stupas, shrines, and viharas, serving as the educational and residential facilities for the students. The newly built campus also features works of art using stucco, metal, and stone. The development cost of Nalanda University’s new campus is said to be Rs 1749 crore. It has two academic blocks containing 40 classrooms with a total capacity of 1900 students. Nalanda University’s new campus also has two auditoriums where 600 students can sit while the hostel of the new campus can provide accommodation to 550 students.
