Pneumococcal vaccine shortage in Thane district, thousands of children denied vaccination

Thane : It has come to light that the Pneumococcal Vaccine is not available in the hospitals of Thane. This vaccine is administered to infants up to 9 months of age. But for the last one and a half months, the vaccine has not been supplied by the state administration in the district. In such a situation, the health of all the children in the district has become at risk.

The polio campaign was recently launched by the state government. This campaign was implemented by Municipal Corporation in urban areas of Thane district and by Zilla Parishad in rural areas. Several children were given polio doses. Similarly, to protect children from various diseases, the state government provides free vaccines to children up to five years of age. These include vaccines for tuberculosis (TB), polio, hepatitis B, pertussis, whooping cough, tetanus, Hib-meningitis and pneumonia, measles and rubella, Japanese encephalitis (JE) and rotavirus (diarrhoea).

In addition, to reduce the risk of pneumonia in children, the state government provides Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) to children up to 9 months of age. All these vaccines are given to children through municipal administration and Zilla Parishad health centers. But pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is not available in Thane district for the last one and a half to two months. Due to which children are deprived of this vaccine. Meanwhile, pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is not available, but the state government is making efforts to make it available. But some medical officials, on the condition of anonymity, said that due to inadequate supply of these vaccines, there is a shortage of these vaccines in Thane district as well as in the state government.

According to the information received, in Thane Municipal Corporation area, 2 to 3 thousand per month, in Kalyan Dombivli 1 to 1.5 thousand, in Ulhasnagar, Ambernath, Badlapur, Bhiwandi many thousands of babies are vaccinated every month. Apart from this, pneumococcal vaccine is administered to 11 thousand babies in 5 tehsils of the rural campus. Since this vaccine is not available for the last one and a half to two months, there is a fear of increasing the risk of pneumonia in children.
