The Sri Lankan team on the tour of New Zealand have been defeated by 2 wickets in the first test against the host team. New Zealand took a 0-1 lead in the two-Test series. New Zealand won the prize and elected to field first in the Test which began on March 9 in Christchurch. Batting first, the Sri Lankan team led by Dimuth Karunaratne scored 355 runs. Kosal Mendis scored 87 runs and skipper Dimuth Karunaratne scored 50 runs. On behalf of New Zealand, captain Tim Southee bowled brilliantly and dismissed 5 players. Matt Henry took 4 wickets and Michael Bracewell took 1 wicket. New Zealand scored 373 runs in their first innings, which included Daryl Mitchell’s 102 and Tom Latham’s 67. Aseetha Fernando took 4 wickets, Lahiru Kumara 3 wickets, Kisun Rajitha 2 wickets and Prabhat Jayasuriya 1 wicket. Sri Lanka started the second innings with a trail of 18 runs and scored 302 runs with Angelo Mathews adding 115 runs. Blair Techner took 4 wickets, Matt Henry 3 wickets and captain Tim Southee 2 wickets. New Zealand managed to reach the target of 284 runs for 8 wickets and won by 2 wickets. Kane Williamson scored 121 not out, Daryl Mitchell scored 81 runs. Hosts New Zealand have taken a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.
