An analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) based on political parties’ income tax returns and details of donations received filed with the Election Commission of India, between the financial years 2004-05 and 2020-21, found eight national parties received Rs 15,077.97 crore from unknown sources.

New Delhi: An analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) revealed that national parties collected over Rs 15,077.97 crore from unknown sources between 2004-05 and 2020-21.
According to a report published in The Hindu, the total income of national and regional parties from unknown sources for 2020-21 is Rs 690.67 crore. Of this, 47.06 per cent is the income from electoral bonds.
ADR included eight national parties and 27 regional parties for this analysis.
An analysis based on the parties’ income tax returns (ITR) and details of donations received before the Election Commission of India (ECI) found that national parties received Rs 15,077.97 crore between the financial years 2004-05 and 2020-21. from unknown sources.
National parties include Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC), All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) , the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the National People’s Party (NPP).
The analysis said, ‘For the financial year 2020-21, eight national parties have declared income of Rs 426.74 crore from unknown sources and 27 regional parties have received income of Rs 263,928 crore from unknown sources.’
Regional parties include Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), AIADMK, AIFB, AIMIM, AIUDF, BJD, CPI (ML) (L), DMDK, DMK, GFP, JDS, JDU, JMM, KC -M , MNS, NDPP, NPF, PMK, RLD, SAD, SDF, Shiv Sena, SKM, TDP, TRS and YSR Congress.
The analysis said, ‘During the financial year 2020-21, the Congress declared Rs 178.782 crore as income from unknown sources, which is 41.89 percent of the total income of national parties from unknown sources (Rs 426.742 crore).’
The BJP declared an income of Rs 100,502 crore from unknown sources, which is 23.55 percent of the total income of national parties from unknown sources.
The top five regional parties in terms of undisclosed income are YSR Congress with Rs 96.25 crore, DMK with Rs 80.02 crore, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) with Rs 67 crore, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) with Rs 5, 77 crore and Aam Aadmi Party is involved with Rs.
The ADR said the combined income of the Congress and the NCP from the sale of coupons between the financial years 2004-05 and 2020-21 is Rs 4,261.83 crore.
In the 2020-21 financial year, discrepancies were reported in the audit reports and contributions of seven political parties. These parties include AITC, CPI, AAP, SAD. KC-M, AIFB and AIUDF are participating.
