Municipal elections in Manitoba are this fall, but there aren’t many candidates.

A lack of competition has resulted in celebrated seats in some rural communities as well as in Winnipeg.

The rural community of Montcalm has seven seats recognized and one vacant for this fall election.

“I think it’s very difficult for a lot of municipalities to find or fill seats right now… There have been some very big problems in the past few years,” said Jolene Bird, CEO of RM.

Things like drought and flooding have taken their toll on politicians in the area, Bird said, and Winnipeg’s counties are grappling with similar problems.

Experts said the lack of competition bodes ill for democracy.

“We want more people to compete, both for the value of what’s going on in the City Council or City Council, and in terms of our citizens’ engagement with the political issues of the day,” he told policy expert Chris Adams.

There are a number of reasons people don’t run for political office, such as: B. socioeconomic status, voter harassment, or lack of time and resources.

Former city councilor Paula Havixbeck knows this all too well.

“I was a single parent with young kids and I’ve had people at public hearings pointing fingers and swearing in front of my kids … and people outside my home,” Havixbeck said.

What’s more, women are still traditionally in caretaker roles, making it harder for them to run for political office, Havixbeck added.

Of the thirteen council electoral districts remaining in Winnipeg, 42 are running and only five are women.
