Two Maccabi Netball Club teams proudly represented their club at the Randwick Netball Association (RNA) 2022 Season Grand Final last Saturday – one became a stunning B2 Senior Champion when they won by a single point and the other put up a good fight. but finishing 12 girls Division 5 as runners-up.

The senior B2 decider was advised to go to the end considering the last time the third-placed Maccabi team played the first-placed Coogee Dolphins the result was a 28-all tie.

Trailing 4-0 in the early minutes, Maccabi fought his way back to the top by the end of the first quarter and extended his lead to four points from Frederich and goalscorer Shayna after three quarters with a good service from midfield to Bekki on goal Slotar.

Coogee upped his intensity and went on the attack in the final quarter, fighting back to a point clear of Maccabi with five minutes remaining.

Under intense pressure, Maccabi responded with determined defense, limiting the Dolphins to just three more goals and forcing several turnovers that allowed Maccabi to score three goals of his own and secured a memorable 39-38 win.

Frederick tells The AJN that when things got tough in the fourth quarter and their lead waned, “we just encouraged each other to keep going, keep going and never give up.

“Having that attitude in the last few minutes was important… what a game!”

Slotar said: “The feeling within the team was very relieved and proud during the final times as we were the underdogs but clinging to victory.

“We kept our heads up and wanted to say thank you to our supporters who came out to cheer us on from the sidelines.”

Player Erin Zimerman added, “We just gave it our all to keep that lead.”

The team did not have a regular coach this season, but their backup coach on the big final day, Leanne Michaelson, said: “Some of the players on this team have been playing together for 15 years and some are also referees and junior coaches.

“They are the longest serving players at our club and they are as passionate about netball and playing for Maccabi as ever so it was wonderful to see them win their grand final.”

In the 12-girl Division 5 decider, second-placed Maccabi Bronze faced minor Premiers Randwick Rugby and Netball Club’s Orange team, who burned in the first two quarters to establish an 11-3 lead.

Maccabi Bronze looked like another team in the third quarter, able to find a new streak, establish and hold possession and distribute the ball more effectively in attack.

As a result, they reduced their lead to 8-12 after three quarters.

But their opponents refocused on defense in the final quarter, limiting the Maccabi girls to just two more goals while scoring seven of their own to prevail 19-10.

“I really love this team.”

The team’s assistant coaches, Clio Stockley and Chelsea Roth, said: “The girls made a nice comeback in the third quarter and we’re so proud of all their performances this season.”

“They had a lot of fun … and also grew as a team.”
