ISLAMABAD: On Monday, a district court and bail restoration sessions made the arrest of Imran Khan, chairman of the non-bailable Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in the Toshakhana case.

On a petition submitted by the former prime minister asking to be excused from hearing the case, the Islamabad court had earlier reserved its decision.

Due to Khan’s continued absence from court appearances, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) stayed the non-bailable arrest order for him last week.

Khan was directed to ensure that he appears before the lower court on March 13 by IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, after the PTI leader’s appeal against the Additional Sessions, Judge Zafar Iqbal judgment was accepted.

However, Khan submitted an exemption petition during today’s hearing, citing security risks, yet failed to appear in court.

The judge ordered the arrest of the PTI leader and produced him before the court on March 18 after rejecting Khan’s plea for immunity.

The court said that Imran Khan should be brought to court by the police.

Hearing today

At the start of today’s hearing, Imran Khan’s legal team presented two applications: one for his release from the case and another for a new exemption, both backed by security concerns.

Khan’s lawyer, Khawaja Haris, asked Judge Iqbal to delay making a judgment until today at 3:15 pm Judge Iqbal heard the case and did so.

Moreover, Haris filed a plea seeking dismissal of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) charge against the PTI leader.

The sessions court ordered the PTI chairman to appear for his indictment in the case. But, Khan’s lawyer said the PTI chief would not appear in court today.

According to Khan’s lawyer, who also claimed that the correct legal procedures were not followed when a complaint was lodged against Khan, it should be decided whether the case is admissible before an arrest order is issued.

‘Arrest warrant should be executed’

Berat Khan, a member of the PML-N, said that the PTI leader has wrecked the country. He lamented that “Imran Khan had not planned any project in the country” during his three years as president.

Ranjha claims that the PTI chairman must appear in the court and participate in the case. He is a thief, said the man, not Sadiq or Ameen.
