Over 200 Panjrapole (cow shelter home) trustees abandoned thousands of cows in protest against the BJP government in Gujarat failing to provide financial assistance of Rs 500 crore to run cow shelter homes. This led to traffic jams on the North Gujarat highways on Friday. Banaskantha Panjrapole trustee Kishor Dave told the media that since last 15 days the trustees are protesting and demanding financial assistance, as promised in the state budget for the year 2022-23. After hearing their repeated pleas, the trustees on Thursday released thousands of cows on state and national highways besides government premises in north Gujarat.

Millions of cows live in Gaushala

In Banaskantha alone 1,500 Panjrapole shelters around 4.5 lakh cows, 170 Panjrapole shelters have 80,000 cows. The Panjrapole Trust has to bear an expenditure of Rs 60 to 70 per cattle per day to feed them. Post-Covid, donations to Panjrapole have dried up, and running a shelter home without funds is becoming increasingly difficult. If the government does not release the amount at the earliest, the agitation may take a furious form.
