Seven defendants at Gujarat’s Vadodara Central Prison have been hospitalized after drinking soapy water after a clash at the compound, police said on Thursday.
The defendants, who are charged in various criminal cases, also assaulted the jailer in Wednesday night’s incident, they said.
Deputy Police Commissioner (Zone 2) Abhay Soni said that those charged under the Gujarat Counter-Terrorism and Organized Crime Act are not allowed to get food from outside, while others are allowed .
“Those who were barred from entering the facility took the lunch boxes of others on trial and kept them under their control. When the prison authorities found out about this, they tried to send her to another barracks,” he said.
“Then a clash ensued, and seven inmates protested by mixing soap with water and consuming it in large quantities, according to the information obtained,” the officer said.
The defendants also assaulted the jailer, after which an FIR was registered against them at the Raopura Police Station on charges including rioting, attacks on public officials, unlawful gatherings, he said.
The seven inmates were taken to the SSG hospital in Vadodara on Wednesday evening. Her condition is stable, Soni said.
