10 dead, 11 injured in UP in rain-related incidents; Aligarh to close schools until Saturday: The Tribune IndiaNews WAALI

At least 10 people were killed, seven in Etawah, and 11 were injured in lightning strikes and walls and houses collapsed as heavy rains in parts of Uttar Pradesh disrupted normal life in Firozabad and forced schools in Aligarh to close.

Aside from Etawah – where the seven who died included four children from one family – deaths have also been reported from Firozabad (2) and Balrampur (1) districts since Wednesday, officials said.

Rainfall or thunderstorms have been observed in most places across West Uttar Pradesh since Wednesday morning, according to the India Meteorological Department. It said Etawah Observatory had recorded 140mm of rainfall in 24 hours as of 8:30am Thursday. Rain was also reported from Agra.

Late Wednesday evening, three fatal wall or house collapses occurred in Etawah district, killing a total of seven people.

Four children – Sinku, 10, Abhi, 8, Sonu, 7, and Aarti, 5 – died in their sleep after a wall of their home in Chandra Pura village collapsed under the Civil Lines Police Station, District Judge Avnish of Etawah said Kumar Rai.

Her sibling, 5, and grandmother, Chandni Debi, 70, were injured in the incident. Etawah Police Superintendent Kapil Dev Singh said an elderly couple – Ram Sanehi, 65, and Reshma Debi, 62, died when a gas pump boundary wall collapsed on their hut in Kripalpur village under Ekdil police station .

In another incident in the district, Jabar Singh, 35, was buried alive after his house in Andava ke Banglan village collapsed under Chakarnagar police station after heavy rains, SHO Deepak Kumar said.

In Firozabad, Shivam, 6, was killed and eight family members injured in a house collapse in the village of Banshinagar under Shikohabad Police Station Wednesday night, District Judge Ravi Ranjan said.

The injured were taken to the district hospital.

In another incident in the district, Isaac Ali, 57, died under the rubble of a collapsed wall in Nagla Gawe, in the Eka Police Station area.

Officials said normal life has been disrupted by the incessant rains in Firozabad over the past two days, affecting people’s movement due to waterlogging in urban and rural areas.

In Balrampur district, Ashraf, 13, died and his 12-year-old cousin suffered burns from lightning in Bargadwa Saif village of Pachpedwa police station on Thursday, a senior official said.

The injured was taken to a hospital.

In Aligarh, heavy rains over the past three days have caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas of the city and rural belt, affecting normal life in the district.

District Judge Inder Veer Singh issued an order ordering all state and private schools to remain closed until Saturday, according to an official press release.
